about the artist

After finishing art school and leaving h
er native Cincinnati, Sora Kimberlain spent sixteen years as a designer, installation artist, writer and performer in experimental theatre. Since then, she’s been committed to her sculpture, painting and installation work.

Reflecting the human condition through an expressionistic lens and a powerful visual voice, she produces an evocative and electrifying body of figurative work. One critic referred to a recent exhibition as “a remarkable show ... from this versatile and prolific artist.”

She has shown recent work at venues including Femina Potens Gallery (San Francisco), the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art and the RNG Gallery (Omaha, NE), Blue Moon Gallery (Bali, Indonesia), Libreria Spazio Libre (Sicily, Italy), the Cabrillo Gallery (Aptos, CA), and the Museum of Nebraska Art (Kearney, NE).

Kimberlain’s painting and sculpture can be found in private collections internationally. The archives of Kimberlain’s work in experimental theatre are housed at the University of California, Berkeley, Special Collections, Bancroft Library.

I see the human body as a living library filled with stories. Those stories and the depth of emotion and movement of the figure continually inspire me. Seeing our bodies as electrical systems that create a circuitry of physical and emotional identity expands that library, supplying endless visual material.

My past experience in experimental theatre has led me to create work in several media. In my 2D work, the physical application of paint and color contribute to that kinetic action. The integration of LED light and video into my 3D work has served as an additional avenue to add movement and depth to the stories. These tools also serve to reflect how technology so permeates

our lives. The medium of stone has its own voice that includes its long history of formation in the earth.

The accumulated meanings of our lives can be both lasting and impermanent. My current work is about histories and

possibilities expressed through the figure, and about the mysteriousness, vulnerability, and even the humor in these forms.
